Inua Ellams Spring Tour 2010 – The 14th Tale

2010 January 20

The wonderful Inua Ellams is back for his Spring Tour of his award winning The 14th Tale, kicking off a 2010 to be excited about! Following last year’s 23 Date tour, Fuel presents the spring tour of Inua Ellams’ award winning The 14th Tale!

The 14th Tale is a free flowing mellifluous narrative that tells the hilarious exploits of a natural born mischief growing from the clay streets of Nigeria to roof tops in Dublin, and finally to London. Inua vividly recreates the characters that punctuate his upbringing in deft and beautiful poetry, while challenging the audience’s expectations of what it is to be a young, black male in London today.

“The 14th Tale comes as a sharp reminder of the power of language and rhythm in theatre, and of how dramatic poetry can create whole worlds through the voice of a single performer.” Scotsman, Fringe First award winner, Edinburgh 2009

“Intimate and engaging…the theatrical calling card of a bright young talent.” The Times

Inua Ellams is a Word & Graphic Artist currently residing in London. His work is known for its iconic imagery, unashamed beauty and attention to detail.

22nd January – Mark Hole’s Friday Night Party at the Ginglik

2010 January 18

The inimitable Mark Hole is back for 2010 at The Ginglik in Shepherds Bush.  A born entertainer, accompanying himself on piano, this man is a hoot. Mark combines a totally unique voice – enormous, yet sensitive, part croon, part light tenor; with a warped and original songwriting talent, surreal, moving and often downright deviant. Not to be missed.

And in a recent review of a OneTaste event in Brighton where Mark Hole performed, Mark Ede said: “However the trump card was Mark Hole, a somewhat music hall version of Jamie Cullum and Tom Baxter’s lovechild doing Supertramp-like tunes. Weird but brilliant.”

So pop down to Shepherds Bush on Friday 22nd January for some serious entertainment!

£6 pounds to get in if you get there before 10pm otherwise £8 on the door.

15th January – Year of the Poet Event #001: Poejazzi at the Southbank

2010 January 4

Now we have broken the first few days in for 2010 – it is time for the first event!

And to do that the wonderful Poejazzi boys (Joshua, Inua & Musa) have given us the amazing event of  “Year of the Poet Event #001: Poejazzi at the Southbank”.

Poejazzi returns to Southbank Centre and kicks off its ‘Year of the Poet’ season with a packed hour-long show featuring four magnificent acts, either emerging or established, from the worlds of poetry and music.

Poetic duties will be attended to by Alex Gwyther, whose wit recalls that of the Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner, and Ventriloquist – a mix between Gil Scott-Heron and Jack Kerouac – who last year read regularly on BBC Radio One. There’ll be music from Ed Sheeran, the superb singer-songwriter who though only 18 just supported Just Jack on his UK tour, and Heidi Vogel, whose Nina Simone-meets-bossa nova vocals have graced the Royal Albert Hall and other stages with the Cinematic Orchestra. Not to be missed, this special edition of Friday Tonic is a curtain-raiser for the Henry Rollins show in the RFH later the same evening.

ABOUT “THE YEAR OF THE POET”:
In 2010, Poejazzi presents “The Year of the Poet [詩人]“: a 12-month programme of events to highlight and celebrate the brilliance of the spoken word and music scene, during which Poejazzi will team up with several of the UK’s foremost live entertainment venues. Confirmed venues – so far – include the Camden Crawl, the Ministry of Sound, the Southbank Centre, and The Roundhouse; where Benin City will launch their debut EP in March. (In other words, stay tuned!)

ABOUT “POEJAZZI”:
“London’s premier spoken word and music night” – Southbank Centre
“Consistently blinding: *****” – Edinburgh Fringe Festival (2007, 2008)
“No.1 Critics’ Choice” – TimeOut

Poejazzi, one of the leading entertainment nights in the UK, brings artists supremely gifted with words and music to new audiences; previous performers have included Beardyman, Dockers MC, Jamie Woon, Natty and Scroobius Pip. This superb show, consistently sold-out through the three years of its life, provides a platform for the country’s best emerging talent.

Poejazzi is presented and promoted by three of the UK’s finest performance poets, Joshua Idehen, Inua Ellams, and Musa Okwonga, whose work is both acapella and accompanied by music. They have been featured by BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme, BBC6 Music, Xfm, Q Magazine Radio, The Times, The Sunday Times, The Scotsman, Channel4.com, Prospect and Attitude magazines; they have performed at the Royal Albert Hall and the 2008 EU Energy Summit; and they have been commended for their contribution to live literature to Her Majesty the Queen.

I would also like to add that this event is FREE so you’d better get down there early!

OneTaste is OFFICIALLY 5 Years Old!!

Come and join them to celebrate this milestone of 5 years in the UK music and poetry scene! They have prepared a special show that promises birthday cheer and Christmas merriment all in one sitting! Read below for the line up… OneTaste family and newbies, plus the return of the OneTaste choir to excite your ear holes…

They have also put a limited run of EARLY BIRD TICKET SALES! First come first served! Click the link and see if you’re lucky ;)

Bridgette Amofah – The Times named her as the female artist to watch out for this year. Bridgette has been part of the OneTaste family since the beginnings up in the Tavistock room of The Bedford. What a musical journey she’s been on in that time. Entering yet another incredible phase in her musical direction, come and see a set that you perhaps have never seen Bridgette play before (unless you saw her play the festival). Mind-blowing may be a word to describe it. Fresh of tour fronting Oi Va Voi, Bridgette is now concentrating on her solo material and coming to play with us on our birthday! :)
http://www.myspace.com/bridgettesmusic

Stac - Lush harmonies gallore and the odd gorgeously deliberate note clash thrown in for good measure. Stac writes jazzy, soulful and sometimes uncomprehendably intricate tunes that leave hear audience beaming.
http://www.myspace.com/stacca

Michael Kiwanuka – We listen to Michael’s music and it makes us feel so good. It’s classic, classic like Otis, classic like Bill… Blessed with an incredible voice full of warmth and soul, Michael’s set is going to be the perfect set for OneTaste’s 5th Birthday and Christmas celebrations. Just take a listen to his myspace to know what we mean.
http://www.myspace.com/mikeksongs

Byron Vincent
– From surreal punk rock disquisition about the socialist inclinations of the Smurfs to astutely acerbic examinations of the fraying tapestry of British culture. Byron Vincent’s oratory fuses comedy, poetry and doe eyed bewilderment to create a unique and entertaining spoken word experience. He also does a rather fine haiku about Elton John’s preferred choice of salad.
http://www.myspace.com/byron_vincent

Andy Craven-Griffiths – Born and bred in Leicester, Andy is the middle child of seven and always had to fight for attention. He started writing out of anger and carried on because he loved saying things and liked it when people listened. Andy’s poetry is witty, astute and sentimental all in one. His poetry possesses a natural charm and an insight. He’s also John Berkavitch’s brother!
http://www.myspace.com/cravengriffiths

OneTaste Choir – Sassy soul loveliness! Now a 17 voice, girl choir, OneTaste started in 2007 with Mae McKenna leading the ensemble. The newly regrouped choir will be singing with Stac and then breaking out to do some Christmas jingles just for you!

Charlie still retains his “day job” of running a performance collective called THROWDOWN and the last time he was on stage at One Taste was actually as a spoken word artist. The workshop will be focused on learning how to lucid dream and exploring the benefits of waking up within your dreams!

* Tim Freke - http://www.timothyfreke.com – Standup Philosophy – Lucid Living talk – come listen, experience and talk with one of the UK’s most acclaimed philosophers and his Big Love theory.

Tim is the author of over twenty books that have established his reputation as a groundbreaking scholar and original free-thinker. First known for his work in unearthing hypocrisies in religion, getting his booked banned in some countries, he is best known for his groundbreaking work on Christian Gnosticism with his close friend Peter Gandy, including The Jesus Mysteries, which was a top 10 best-seller in the UK and USA, and a ‘Book of the Year’ in the UK Daily Telegraph.

Tim is also an innovative ‘stand-up philosopher’ – a concept he developed from the ancient idea of a philosopher as a travelling ‘spiritual entertainer’ who transformed people’s consciousness. I highly recommend coming to hear him talk, to listen, be inspired, to challenge and debate with. It’s an excellent mind and soul experience work out! come see for yourself.

Inua Ellams on Tour – The 14th Tale

2009 October 2

the 14th tale tour

Fuel presents Inua Ellams’ Award winning 14th Tale: “I’m from a long line of trouble makers, of ash skinned Africans, born with clenched fists and a natural thirst for battle, only quenched by breast milk.”

Inua Ellams is a Word & Graphic Artist currently residing in London. His work is known for its iconic imagery, unashamed beauty and attention to detail.

Alex Gwyther – Surrey based wordsmith and aspiring children’s writer Alex Gwyther’s Hip Hop influenced poetical prose covers short stories and poems about everyday life … and the little bits in between.
A graduate in Creative Writing and Drama and a proud owner of a 2,000m swimming badge, he loves a row on the weekend in SW6, can’t wait to draw Milwall in the cup and is buzzing about making his debut performance for ‘OneTaste’.

“When someone has raw skill and a self awareness that makes it natural you can’t really touch them. Alex has two big bags of both. Ace’ – Polarbear

Miss Jo Williams
– She feels fabulous when she’s singing her everything out.

She performs solo with her nylon string guitar as Miss Jo Williams, telling personal and often comical stories of her life.

Influenced by many varied and brilliant artists such as Dolly Parton, Harry Belafonte, Suzanne Vega, Bjork Jonny Cash etc… She’s toured across the country and plays often in London and you may recognise this lovely lady as the singer in David Goo’s variety band!

Inua Ellams – Inua Ellams is a Word & Graphic Artist currently residing in London. Born in Nigeria, ‘84, he quickly fell in love with visual art and worked solely in this field until he started writing in ‘02.
Constantly striving to merge the disciplines, his work in both fields is known for its unashamed beauty and attention to detail.

Mechanical Bride – Mechanical Bride is the beautiful work of artist Lauren Doss, a young girl from surburbia, buried deep in the perversion of music, all things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small… delicately experimental, folk/electro that is at once haunting, yet charged with beauty.
First spotted singing with Larrikin Love, Transgressive Records signed her after just hearing one 80 second a cappella called Chapel. Mechanical Bride will be making her debut at OneTaste this October.
